People on the autism spectrum can oftentimes be misinterpreted and misunderstood. So, what exactly is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or autism as it is commonly known?
- It is a neurodevelopmental disorder and is not contagious like the common flu
- It tends to affects communication and the way one relates with others
- It is a spectrum disorder, ranging from mild, to moderate to severe
- Autism lasts a lifetime
- No two persons with autism are alike. Each individual on the spectrum is unique.
Some traits of autism include:
- Difficulty understanding and responding to non-verbal cues in communication and social interactions
- Tendency towards repetitive patterns of behaviour
- Tendency towards sensory issues
